Docent Program

Docent program Santa Barbara historical museum
The Docent Program at our Museum is a mentoring program which focuses on utilizing each person's interests and skills. Training includes a docent training manual and additional reading, in class lectures and discussions, field trips to local sites, and shadowing of experienced docents.

What is a Docent?

A docent is a volunteer teacher who serves the Museum and the community as a local history educator.

What Do Docents Do?

Currently, we have three types of docents at our Museum. Some docents choose to volunteer in all three categories, while others focus on one area of expertise. Touring Docents lead adult gallery tours, School Program Docents lead our programs and tours for school groups visiting the Museum and our Outreach Docents give PowerPoint presentation in the local community and in the area high schools. Docents attend monthly continuing education meetings as part of their ongoing professional development. Once our historic homes reopen, we will also have historic home docents.
